Providence Health & Services Data Engineer II - API Developer - in Seattle, Washington


Providence is calling a Data Engineer II (API Developer) to Providence Population Health Finance in Seattle, WA. This position can sit in any of our 7 state locations ( WA, AK, CA, OR, NM, TX, MT) or remote.

We are seeking a Data Engineer II that will create and manage FHIR APIs and other APIs using cloud-based technologies. He or she will also write the scripts used to combine healthcare data from many internal and external sources into analytic-ready datasets. The Data Engineer will develop de-duplication, normalization and source/target mapping scripts to integrate data from payers, provider systems and third parties. He or she may also assist in database design and algorithm improvement. The Data Engineer will continuously improve APIs and modify them as the source data changes and business needs evolve. He or she may also train and mentor other members of the development team.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of FHIR and other APIs using cloud technologies and implementing data security standards around data exchange.

  • Lead the development of algorithms, metrics, and processes needed to support population health initiatives, risk contracts and government programs.

  • Lead strategically important analytic projects across Providence St Joseph Health.

  • Mentor other healthcare analysts and lead team meetings and projects.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Informatics, MPH, MBA, Statistics, Computer Science or a related field

  • Minimum of three(3) years of experience in writing and modifying advanced APIs.

  • Minimum of five(5) years of programming skills in C#, python, UNIX shell, and/or Java.

  • Minimum of three(3) years of advanced SQL skills including stored procedures, triggers and advanced functions.

  • Advanced demonstrated written communication skills.

  • Advanced ability to work within tight time frames and meet strict deadlines.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in writing and modifying FHIR APIs.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in cloud computing in AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.

  • Advanced ability to drive multiple projects to successful completion.

  • Skilled at working effectively with cross functional teams in a matrix organization.
