Providence Health & Services Senior Data Engineer- Home and Community Care in Tukwila, Washington


Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Senior Clinical Data Engineer (1.0 FTE/Day Shift) to PSCS Divisional Services in Gardena, CA.

We are seeking a Senior Clinical Data Engineer who will work independently with all levels of Core Leaders (System, Region, Service Area and Ministry) utilizing his/her advanced subject matter expertise and coding skills to lead teams, design advance data sources, develop quality assurance processes, test multiple hypotheses, design challenging visualizations, use advanced contemporary data science techniques, provide ongoing training and facilitate multiple projects.

Areas of particular focus include the measurement of Quality and Value of Care (i.e. good outcomes per unit cost).

This position ensures that all work produced by the Clinical Analytics team is conducted with thoughtful analytical discipline, and will support other members of the team through experience with computational methods.

The audience for this position's work is the entire Providence St. Joseph Health system, from members of the Board of Directors to front line caregivers.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Clinical Data Expertise: Advanced Subject Matter Expert and analytic resource in a number of clinical areas applying knowledge of definitions and identifying best sources of data

  • Data Acquisition: Utilize advanced SQL and/or other languages for complex data acquisition, and/or is an advanced user of graphical user interface-based programs for very complex data acquisition projects

  • Data Architecture: Design advanced data sources, views and summaries and creates functional data architecture

  • Data Validation / Accuracy: Develop quality assurance processes; perform data validation; critically evaluates the output of reports to produce reports with a high degree of accuracy

  • Reporting / Analysis: Work with clients to develop and iteratively test multiple hypotheses around complex questions; provide strong written summaries of findings; creates presentations that succinctly address and anticipates the questions of the audience

  • Display / Visualization: Perform visualization design; complete challenging visualization projects independently; utilize good sensibility in visual storytelling

  • Mentorship/Training: Provide ongoing analytic and general training to caregivers outside Clinical Analytics and provide regular training and mentorship for Clinical Analytics colleagues

  • Statistics / Data Science: Use advanced contemporary data science techniques and/or biostatistics to complete routine and complex projects with the help of a mentor

  • Program / Project Facilitation: Facilitate multiple projects with proven results


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • BA/BS degree in Health Information Management, Computer Science, Mathematics, business administration, healthcare or a related clinical or analytic discipline

  • The equivalent of MA/MS degree in Health Information Management, Computer Science, Mathematics, business administration, healthcare or a related clinical or analytic discipline, or Six Sigma Black or other similar designation / certification

  • Seven (7) or more years of relevant data analysis

  • Experience with database query and analysis languages (e.g. SQL, R, SAS, Python) and data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, D3)

  • Ability to interpret complex statistical data

  • Demonstrated ability to define, develop and analyze performance measures and metrics

  • Demonstrated project management skills

  • Possesses knowledge of healthcare including: Clinical terms and concepts, Administrative Coding, including DRG, ICD, CPT

  • Displays a record of self-motivated discovery, intense intellectual curiosity, and a passion for working with data to answer important questions

  • Quantitative skills and analytical abilities to interpret complex data for strategic projects and conduct statistical analyses

  • Familiarity with database structures, data definitions, and data relationships sufficient to understand and utilize complex data models with multifaceted record relationships, key structures, and record identification schemas

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • MA/MS degree in Health Information Management, Computer Science, Mathematics, business administration, healthcare or a related clinical or analytic discipline

  • Certification in an IT discipline, application, or tool for at least one (1) year
